Kondapaneni Ramalingeswara Rao (Art Director, Publicity Design)
Sri K. Ramalingeswara Rao had worked for 35 years in Telugu Film industry and worked hard with discipline and simplicity as his formulae besides, being a skilled artist. He is known as Ramalingam to many people working for Cinema at that time and even now. This legendary Art Director was born to Sri Kondapaneni Chalamaiah Chowdary- Sahadevamma, in a village called Duggirala, Tenali on 17th February, 1945. His father is an Ayurvedic Doctor. Sri Ramalingeswara Rao spent all his childhood in the same village and later moved to Tenali for his Matriculation and joined Rama Tutorial College over there in order to complete his education.

His father Chalamaiah Chowdary was a member in Praja Natya Mandali, which is a homeland of various artists. In that case, he had some close contacts with many popular stars over there and that helped the former in starting career in Telugu Cinema. So, Sri Ramalingeswara Rao moved to Madras after his Matriculation in 1960 and joined Sri Nimmagadda Venkateswara Rao, who is a friend of his father; began his career as a Publicity Designer in the former’s N.V.K.R. Organization and worked for the films like ‘Bharya Bhartalu’, ‘Kalasivunte Kaladu Sukham’ etc. And later, he was supported by Katragadda Narasaiah, Gummadi and Jaggaiah, who helped him in joining as an apprentice to T.V.S. Sharma. In that fashion, his journey in Telugu Cinema went forward in a lightning speed.

Within a short time, he got introduced to Superstar Krishna and his life turned towards success path from then. Actually, Superstar Krishna was very much impressed with the work of Sri Ramalingeswara Rao and advised him to shift his focus onto Art Direction from Designing platform for a better future. He tried a lot to get set in that particular field and finally, bagged a chance to work as an Assistant to Art Director Kudaravelli Nageswara Rao for the film ‘Pedarasi Peddamma’ on the banner P.S.R. Pictures. He learnt few techniques while working as an assistant to the former. He faced little tough situations in building his career in this particular department during 1962-1964 and in that case, he returned to his village Duggirala empty-handed, finding no other opportunity.

After few years, Sri Vishwashanti Aalapati Surendar had come to know about Sri Ramalingeswara Rao and asked the latter to come back to Madras in 1967. He is the one, who supported Sri Ramalingeswara Rao in restarting his career in Art department. In that fashion, he rejoined as an Assistant to Sri Kudaravelli. After a certain time, he worked as an Art Director for the first time to the film ‘Rajayogam’ starring Kanta Rao in 1968. Director K.S.R. Das, Producer Donepudi Krishnamurthy and Veerraju upheld Sri Ramalingeswara Rao in doing this project which, later had come out as a super hit and in return brought him very good name as an Art Director. Sri Ramalingeswara Rao is well known as an expert in designing Art just exact to the script and characters for many Socio fantasies besides historical and films relating social standards.

From then, Sri Ramalingeswara Rao worked as an Art Director to the same banner for a period of 12 years, which is a memorable aspect in his life. Later, Sri Ramalingeswara Rao designed a colony in a 5 acre land of Padmalaya in a village called Chintapalli (56 miles away from Vishakhapatnam) for the outdoor shooting process of ‘Alluri Seetaramaraju’ starring Krishna. The latter built it according to the sketch with a sum of about 1 Lakh, in those days and named it as Padmalaya Colony. This set, which was designed by Sri Ramalingeswara Rao stands just as a similar match to Silver stands, Mahabalipuram. Sri Ramalingeswara Rao had also designed costumes for the film ‘Mosagallaku Mosagadu’ besides Art Direction. That get-up has become very popular, standing a brand of Krishna. Apart from Padmalaya, Sri Ramalingeswara Rao had also worked as an Art Director for the films ‘Manishiko Charitra’, ‘Mapallelo Gopaludu’, ‘Muvva Gopaludu’, ‘Muddula Krishnaiah’, ‘Mannemlo Monagadu’, ‘Murali Krishnudu’, ‘Muddula Mavaiah’, ‘Mukkupudaka’ from the banner Bhargav Arts. There was another unforgettable moment in his life i.e. his set named Krishna Gardens for the film ‘Eenadu’ in a land of Padmalaya beside Arunachalam studios, Madras and this brought good reputation to Padmalaya Films. This realistic set stood next to a set designed for a Hindi film ‘Sholay’ in those days. Many people of Cinema appreciated Sri Ramalingeswara Rao in doing such a great job. Sri Ramalingeswara Rao is the only Art Director, who made an appeal to the Government in constructing open studios for making films. His intention was to move Telugu Cinema to Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh from Chennai, which is really appreciable.

This legend was out with almost 250 films as an Art Director including neighboring languages. He was also interested in acting besides Art Direction. In that fashion, he played in few films like ‘Na Pellam Na Ishtam’, ‘Pachhani Samsaram’, ‘Mama Kodallu’, ‘Allari Pilla’ etc. with the support of those respective film directors. This legendary Art Director made few comments on the values and standards being enabled for Arts, which is going towards business apart from innovation now-a-days. He also said that, each and every individual, who has got good skill and passion towards Cinema, will get benefitted for sure. Sri Ramalingeswara Rao faced many tough situations and later was upheld by Superstar Krishna and his brothers, who stood as a reason for his development in that particular field.
